GENERAL INFORMATION
Mountain Region Speech and Hearing Center has established the first preschool program for hearing impaired children in the Tri-Cities Tennessee Virginia area. Establishing an intensive preschool therapeutic program for children with hearing impairments in this community will ensure that all hearing impaired children will have convenient access to professional services. It will also make it possible for these children to enter kindergarten and elementary school better prepared to learn.
This program is a collaborative effort between the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Mountain Region Speech and Hearing Center. For more than fifteen years, the UTK program has demonstrated that children with all manner of hearing impairments who enter their intensive program as infants will enter kindergarten on the same level as their hearing peers; that is, without the need of interpretive services. (These outcomes pertain to hearing-impaired children with normal cognitive skills and without other handicapping conditions.)
